Annoyed, Kiara is able to repeat them from memory, suggesting that she has heard them many times before and grows irritated. Luckily Kion (who had been convinced by Mufasa to help Kiara) arrives and is shortly joined by the rest of the Lion Guard, causing the hyenas to flee. After refusing help from Kiara, the conflicted leader of the Outsiders falls into the river where she is killed in the floodwaters below. Kion fends off Nuka, which draws the attention of Kovu. He hits his head on a rock and passes into unconsciousness. Kovu realizes his blossoming love for Kiara during the musical sequence "Upendi". Zira caught wind of Kovu's betrayal and framed him for an ambush, which led to his expulsion from the Pride Lands. Kovu's view of the enemy pride was slightly altered when he encountered the princess of Pride Rock, Kiara, who had wandered into the Outlands in search of adventure. Kiara rushes up after Kovu and asks Timon what he's doing. Afterward, Simba banished Kovu, his family, and several other lionesses who were loyal to Scar to the Outlands. King Simba watches his daughter embrace the Outsider, and tells Kovu that he had been wrong: Kovu did belong with the pride. She can escape and sneak out at times to reach her goal. With Kovu having joined the fray, Nuka declares that Kion is outnumbered, but Jasiri jumps to his defense and declares that they are even. Kiara watches Kovu's banishment much to her sadness, which she actively protests against her father's decision, only to be stopped by the other lionesses. Kiara then convinces her father to accept the Outsiders as "one" with the Pride Landers. They run down an embankment covered with fallen logs; Kovu nearly slips, but catches onto one of the logs and jumps to safety. Kovu asks to join the pride, but an angry Simba refuses. Rafiki allows Makini to go with the Guard to the Tree of Life. Kovu asks for Simba's forgiveness and Kiara begs her father to comply. She expresses her desire to hunt on alone, and with prodding from Nala, Simba reluctantly agrees. Kovu asks, "The way to where?" During the wait, Nuka grows impatient and tries to attack Jasiri, but Kovu jumps in the way and warns his brother not to start a fight. This is shown when he angrily stands up to his mother after Nuka's death, something he wasn't capable of doing as a cub. Zira does the same to Kovu and the two cubs whisper good-bye to each other before separating. Kovu tries, and together, the two lions follow Timon and Pumbaa down the hillside, scattering birds in all directions. Luckily, Kion and the Lion Guard come to her rescue by driving the hyenas away, before Bunga and Fuli ride through the herd to Kiara. He sees a flock of birds alight on a nearby hillside and runs up the side of the hill. He is the son of Zira, the youngest brother of Nuka and Vitani, and the mate of Kiara. They all laugh uncontrollably and even Kovu seems to be having fun. Janja plans to hold Kiara hostage until Simba hands the Pride Lands over to him. This softer side is beaten down by Zira as he grows older, though it does not entirely disappear. He climbs up the log dam and manages to grab Simba's ankle. Kovu glares at Simba before walking to the rocks outside the cavern to sleep. Kiara is also very strong-willed, and she possesses a strong desire for independence and self-sufficiency. Animators Kovu reveals that he has left the Outsiders and is a rogue. Kovu bonds with Kiara over finding pictures in the stars. Kiara manages to break out of Pride Rock and reunites with Kovu. Anga rescues Kiara first by flying her to safety, then with the help of Hadithi rescues Simba and Nala. She also showed a strong amount of charisma as she convinced both prides that they are better united than against each other. But then Askari reveals to Kion that although he has given up his status as leader of the Lion Guard, he has truly mastered the Roar by letting it go. After another clash with Kion, Kiara goes to Broken Rock to talk with Janja but is ambushed by him and his clan. After Simba sees the wisdom in his daughter's words, he complies. In addition to his bravery, Kovu, unlike his vengeful mother, has also been shown to be very forgiving. Eventually, she softens and tells Kovu that he had been really brave. When the Lion Guard arrives in the Outlands, Anga sees Kovu standing at the edge of Pride Rock. An enraged Simba demands to know why he has come back, and Kovu starts to say that he had nothing to do with the attack, but Simba interrupts him, telling him that he didn't belong in the Pride Lands. As a cub, Kiara is curious and wild-hearted, constantly seeking new adventures and easily fraught at the sight of her safe nest back home in the Pride Lands. Simba growls at Kovu, who quakes in fear. At Pride Rock, Kiara thanks Kovu for saving her life, but he points out that Kiara's hunting skills are rather lackluster and that she could not survive on her own.
